Update Regarding the Pursuance of the Well Property

Clarksville Area Urban Ministries has great respect and appreciation for the residents, business owners, and leaders of our community who have taken time to share their thoughts and concerns about the proposed plan for expanding homeless outreach services at The Well location downtown. Recent discussions and community meetings have shown that many people care deeply about the future of downtown Clarksville and want solutions that support our neighbors in need while also honoring the character and vision of our city.

After careful consideration and listening to the voices of those who expressed concern about the proposed ordinance for the City to purchase the property known as The Well for use as an expanded outreach center, we have decided to pause this process. We know that some residents are worried about the impact of the location on nearby neighborhoods and businesses, and we want to acknowledge and honor those concerns. It is important to us to be part of a community where people feel heard and valued.

We continue to believe strongly in the importance of expanding outreach services, including additional homeless support and emergency shelter efforts, especially as needs grow in our community. Clarksville Area Urban Ministries has long been committed to meeting these needs through programs such as emergency warming shelters and case management support.

However, we also recognize that pressing forward in a way that creates tension or division within the community is not the right path. Rather than continue the ordinance process at this time, we choose to listen, to stand with our neighbors, and to work collaboratively toward a solution that supports both the needs of the individuals we serve and the broader priorities of downtown Clarksville.

We are committed to finding a location and approach that allows us to expand services in a way that reflects the community’s input and aligns with the long-term vision for the heart of our city. We will continue to engage with local leaders, stakeholders, and residents as we pursue options that provide compassionate support for individuals and families experiencing homelessness while respecting the concerns that have been raised.

We thank the community for sharing their perspectives and for participating in this important conversation. We look forward to working together as we move forward in our shared mission to care for those in need.
